3 reasons the quality of your work is suffering (and how to uno reverse them)

That feeling that the work you are producing isn’t as good as it could be is a gut punch of disappointment.

Here are three reasons why it is happening, and how to flip the script…

You are trying to keep too many plates spinning. Everyone I know is competent at piloting a vehicle. Everyone I know is also adept at operating their phones. Almost none of them can do both successfully at the same time. Doing more requires you to lower the quality of your output. It’s why athletes specialize at a specific position. It’s why electricians don’t fix toilets. To increase quality, decrease volume.

You are moving too fast. Quality work usually requires an investment of time. When you have too much to do, you are likely to try to rush through the work and compromise the quality of your output. The nefarious consequence of speeding through your work is that you often have to do it again. If you didn’t have time to do it right the first time, you surely don’t have time to do it twice. Feeling compelled to rush is a sure sign that you need to renegotiate some things so that you can delegate, defer, or delete some of the workload you are carrying.

You are trying to do it alone. I don’t know anyone who is operating at a high level that doesn’t leverage the skills of others to help them do what they do. They engage employees, accountants, machines, tradespeople, assistants, software, travel agents, nannies, lawyers, contractors, and more to help them ensure they have time for the things they are uniquely qualified to do. Being capable of doing something doesn’t mean it is the best use of your time, energy, and focus. Determine where you make the greatest impact in your small business and partner with others to accomplish the rest.

If you want to produce higher quality work, do less of it so that you can give it the time and attention it deserves.
