My honest advice to someone who wants to start making real progress on their goals

Here are the two things that made it difficult for me to accomplish my goals:

  1. The mistaken assumption that I wouldn’t have to fundamentally change my habits and behaviors to get where I wanted to go.
  2. The mistaken assumption that I couldn’t fundamentally change my habits and behaviors to get where I wanted to go.

The pursuit of interesting goals is not like taking on a challenging afternoon hike, after which you will essentially be the same person you were before you began.

The pursuit will force you to change.

You won’t have to betray your deepest values, but you will have to learn to operate differently in order to get where you want to go.

  • You will have to adopt new behaviors…and abandon behaviors that don’t serve you.
  • You will have to engage in new relationships…and abandon relationships that are unhealthy.
  • You will have to learn new ways of approaching the world…and abandon perspectives that limit your ability to grow.
  • You will have to learn to delegate much more than you already do…and abandon the desire to do it all yourself.
  • You will have to be gracious with yourself…and abandon the desire to judge yourself harshly.
  • You will have to leave behind the version of yourself who isn’t capable of achieving your goals…and become the version of yourself who is.

You are likely not capable of accomplishing your goals…yet. As currently configured, you won’t get there.

Thankfully, you can upgrade your capabilities as you pursue your goals and become someone for whom your goals are completely accessible.

You just have to be willing to become.
