The overwhelm is temporary
Nicole and I were in line at an ice cream shop last week and overheard one of the young workers chatting with another while they were working.
“I’m nervous about my driver’s test next week,” she confided.
It’s been about 150 years since I took my driver’s test and it reminded me that the things which feel overwhelming today rarely stay that way.
We adopt new behaviors – like driving…or documenting…or delegating – and they feel a bit awkward at first. We are hyper-aware of our discomfort and (over)think every aspect of what we are learning to do.
And then, after we have rehearsed them for a bit, they feel less daunting.
What once seemed so perilous and overwhelming becomes second nature.
This is your reminder that the overwhelm you may be experiencing today is temporary.
There are ways to mitigate what you are feeling and it won’t be long before you will barely remember how you feel right now.
Just like you probably can’t remember being nervous about your driver’s test.
